  • Matilda Low, her winning design together with the mock cheque

Surreal sensuality with a Gothic vibe set the mood for the night as the models took to the catwalk like manifestations of a dark Dali-esque dream during PJ College of Art & Design (PJCAD)'s 25th Anniversary celebration.

The presentation of alluring avant-garde evening wear called the Return of Anthropomorphism -with their collection inspired by Edward Scissorhands was presented by 16 young PJCAD designers at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre(KLPAC).

The show -which doubled up as a competition between students - was in celebration of the success of the college's 25 years in providing educational and vocational exposure that put students in touch with the very heartbeat of the fast evolving art and design industry.

The students' creations - an ensemble of women's wear for the coming autumn/winter season - was all at once luxurious, elegant, feminine and sensual and the result was a weightless and fluid style with finishing touches and details, all accentuating dark shades and moods.

"The students introduced their vision of the artistic and futuristic designs by using colours usually associated with technology and unexplored territories such as deep plum and stark violet combined with black," said Es Azren, Head of Fashion & Industry at PJCAD.

The work that they have put into was then measured in true professional standards by key people from the industry ;Johnathan Theng and William Liew from MODA, Shawn Leong from Shawn Cutler, Sarah Tan from Oxygen megazine and Juan Tan from Malaysian Today. The design, creativity, concept made up 70 percent of the judging process while the rest of the marks were awarded based on styling and performance. In the end, the winner of the Best Design Award went to Matilda Low who had presented an outstanding ready to wear piece.
