The University of Nottingham Malaysia recently organised its first Table Tennis Open Tournament. The event was indeed a success, attracting more than 80 skilled players across the country, and from as far as Singapore and China.
There were two categories, namely; under-21 and above-21 years old. Twelve teams were formed with seven/eight players in each team. In the end, from the under-21 category, the winners were; Zhu Yi Jie (Champion), Liew Shue Fen (1st runner-up) and Chong Kee Liang (2nd runner-up), while from the Above 21 category, the winners were; Tey Pin Siong (Champion,), Chu Kim Huey (1st runner-up) and Mohd Suhaiddin Azhar (2nd runner-up).
Noticeably, the finals of both categories were the most interesting part of the entire tournament. The performances displayed by the finalists - the quick reaction, good body movement, perfect timing of the ball, to mention a few - were exciting and fast-paced to say the least.
The prizes were as follows; RM400 and gift, RM300 plus gift and RM200 with gift, for first, second and third place respectively. The rest of the players were given participation certificates.
Players from the University of Nottingham Malaysia who participated in this tournament, who qualified for the quarter finals were Karan Rastogi and Tan Chun Haw in the Above 21 and Under 21 Category respectively.
The event which had sponsors including Red Bull, was organised by Karan Rastogi (Organising Chairman), Seah Yong Han (Vice-Chairman), LohXueiJing (Marketing and Event Committee head) and UNTTC Club members.
