Editor's Note: To Be A Dad...

Do you give your parents a hard time? Be honest now. Would you say it was relatively easy for them, bringing you up? Any growing pains from you? And what do you think it's like being a father of a teenager or a 20-something in today's world? What are the challenges, you feel, a breadwinner needs to face in these times? Do you believe that in a decade or two down the road, you'd have the makings of a good dad; that you'd have acquired the right skills to bring up your own kids?

In conjunction with Father's Day, which falls on the third Sunday in June annually, we decided to ask four youths how they would raise their own brood. Rearing a child two decades ago as opposed to bringing up children today is so very different: The environment is different, the standard of living and needs are different, the attitude of youths today - influenced by what goes around them and as well as their peers - is different. Everything has changed so much since our parents' time, and indeed very different from when they were themselves young.

Surely the demands of parenthood - when we have our own children - will be different too. So, how will you be raising your own kids? Will you be using the same formula as that of your parents? Or would you modify and tweak some of yesterday's rules and regulations to suit the times?

Would you inculcate the same values your parents tried to instil in you as you grew up, or would you design your own disciplinary measures.... or maybe you might want to be more relaxed about things and leave most of the decision-making to your teenage children because you feel that your own parents never gave you any leeway to decide what you wanted to do in life.

That's our Up Front topic for this week. Let's see how our four friends tackle the issue.

Speaking on behalf of youths everywhere: To all fathers out there, we want you to know how much we truly appreciate your selfless efforts in raising us all these years, the many sacrifices you've made, and unconditional love you've brought us up with.

    Happy Father's Day!
