Victoria Beckham in uniform fashion
FASHION may no longer salute all-things army but it seems that the military mode has 'laid siege' on Prada. And, judging by the Italian label's strong influence on fashion, it won't be long before we're back in the army again!
It's going to be a strong march into fashion as olive green and khaki become the key colours while camouflage is the "in" print.
The army-inspired look probably began in the early 1990s when American designer Ralph Lauren designed a collection reminiscent of military gear.
It was reported that he could have been inspired by Operation Desert Storm or also known as the Gulf War. While the war lasted for less than 60 days, the fashion battle with the military mode seems to be on-going.
In fact, Lauren's recent Spring 2010 collection also had touches of epaulets and such. Why, even Louis Vuitton came up with bags and scarves printed with the army's signature camouflage pattern a few seasons back.
And, Balenciaga, Balmain and Givenchy's collections several seasons ago featured uniform-style jackets which became the favourite of style icon Victoria Beckham. Not surprisingly, high-street labels like TopShop, MNG and Zara created similar jackets that don't cost a fortune to cater to more fashion followers.
When it comes to wearing the look, one thing to remember is not to overdo it. You would not want to look like a real cadet do you?
Getting into army gear the fashionable way is to make sure everything is worn in a minimal manner.
For instance, you can pair the uniform-style jacket with skinny jeans and accessorise with feminine jewellery like multiple-pearl strands or gold/silver chains to balance out the look.
Multi-pocket cargo pants in khaki or olive green must never be paired with a blouse in the same shade, unless you want to join the troops. Instead, opt for a slinky tee or a bright top. Strappy heels will lend an interesting contrast.
Not very much into cadet couture? May I recommend a camouflage-print scarf then. Like the ubiquitous skull-print or leopard-print scarves, the camouflage pattern on a scarf is a must-have. It can instantly update any ensemble. Plus, it signals a style vibe that's tough yet tres chic.
