Fighting Cervical Cancer

  • Celebrities lend their support to create cervical cancer awareness

Every four minutes, a woman loses her life to cervical cancer. Of the 500,000 women who are diagnosed with it each year, 270,000 women lose the battle. It steals the life from women in the prime of their lives - the young, the old - every woman is at risk of cervical cancer and yet, they are unaware that they have up to 80 per cent chance to acquire the virus that causes it.

Armed with this knowledge, Power Over Cervical Cancer (POCC) has taken the next level in cervical cancer awareness, revving up the efforts hand in hand with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) to educate and empower Malaysian women on this fatal yet preventable disease.

"POCC has been actively advocating disease awareness and encouraging Malaysian women to seek available preventive measures against cervical cancer for over a year now, but we are now amplifying these efforts by creating advocates who are passionate about saving lives," said Dr Saunthari Somasundaram, Executive Director and Medical Director of the NCSM.

With various partners and sponsors such as Reebok and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) working together with NCSM and POCC to up the ante on awareness, raise funds for NCSM as well as unveiling a 30-second television commercial that will see Genevieve Sambhi, former Miss Malaysia/World and a cervical cancer survivor, sharing the message of 'Don't let your dreams of a happy family be put at risk.'
