Often associated with the older crowd, gold jewellery now is made more young and trendy thanks to Dipped.
"Our aim is to make jewellery not only accessible in terms of price (ranging from RM165 to RM455) but also style-wise," says Dipped designer Shuennkee Chong.
Dipped, which is part of thirtyfour, a homegrown brand of bags and accessories, features a selection of sterling silver necklaces, bangles, pendants, rings and earrings dipped in gold, rose gold as well as those in oxidised silver and pure silver.
"A lot of women our age, between 25 and 35, want to wear jewellery but sometimes the ones available in the market are very high-end or too mature looking. It is either those or costume jewellery. But now Dipped is here to fill the gap," says co-designer, Marini Ramlan.
The label offers several design collections such as Smudge, Halo, Heart, Bolt, Mariposa, Dawn, Facet, Duet and Droplet. Each has its own unique character. The Bolt line, which takes after a lightning bolt, is an idea from Marini's younger sister, who's a big fan of pop star Lady GaGa.
Mariposa's (Spanish for butterfly) necklace and earrings come detailed with "butterfly wings", while a Smudge pendant resembles a spot or a speckle.
While the baubles have their distinctive appeal, some a bit more bold while others are elegant, they have one common characteristic. Dipped's bling-bling are practical and versatile for use day and night.
Before they began designing Dipped, the two childhood friends agreed that it must be suitable for everyone and every occasion. It is not just fine jewellery that is limited to grand galas or dinner events only, notes Marini, who works full-time as a content development manager at Primeworks Studios.
What's more, Shuennkee, who has a degree in metal smithing from the Parson's School of Design in New York, says each Dipped piece is valuable.
"They're sterling silver in its pure or oxidised form, or dipped in yellow gold or rose gold. They will tarnish after about six months or so but the slight discolouration actually gives an aged look that's full of character. We do, however, provide a re-dipping service and it's free for the first two dips."
What were the challenges while working on the designs? "We didn't exactly face any problems. In fact, we complement each other because we both have different ideas. I like geometric and clean lines, while Marini is partial towards anything organic. This makes our merger a good one because we are able to provide variety in terms of design," says Shuennkee.
She adds that their next project would be to come up with a collection encrusted with stones for more colour and charm.
