Detour 1950 by Benjamin Kow
  • Benjamin Kow, the brainchild behind the project

Imagine playing a game that is slightly reminiscent of a more civilized version of the Grand Theft Auto series. Now imagine it being set in Malaya in the 1950s and you have Detour 1950.

This week we feature a game called Detour 1950 by Benjamin Kow Wooi Peng, a virtual reality student. It was produced over a span of 20 weeks as part of his final year project at the Malaysian Multimedia University (MMU).

Kow did everything from the designing stages to the visual development, which includes 3D modeling and the animation process and finally the programming.

Centred on the theme of 'Heritage', Benjamin designed a world depicting Malaysia before independence and chose the 'vintage car' as his subject matter. With a third-person role-playing game interface and missions to solve, Benjamin has developed a commendable game base.

Detour 1950 also boasts an impressive virtual architecture of colonial buildings as well as an educational aspect infused into its game play.
