"Out with the old, in with the new."

That's what people say, but the New wouldn't be here if it weren't for the Old. We take a look at which icons of today match up to the icons of the yesteryear.

Just when you thought you'd seen the last of boy bands, Big Time Rush pops up and tries to rival N*Sync. They've upped the pop, but not quite the cute factor. Still, they have a growing fanbase among thanks to their TV show.. We have yet to see if they'll make it to N*Sync's iconic status.

Leann Rimes was the queen teen of heartache during her time and it now seems that Taylor Swift is following in her footsteps. They both hail from country music backgrounds and both write about the love ; both the kind that makes you feel like you're on top of the world, and the kind that hurts.

Matchbox 20 vs. Maroon 5

Year : 1995/2008

Songs you may have heard :

Unwell / This Love

Year : 1995/2009

Songs you may have heard :

Bye Bye Bye vs. Boyfriend

Other than the fact that they both start with the letter M, have a number in their band names and have ridiculously good looking lead singers, both Matchbox 20 and Maroon 5 have similar sounds and write compelling lyrics.

Dr. Dre vs. Timbaland

Year : 1984/1994

Songs you may have heard : The Next Episode vs. The Way I Are

 Usher

vs. Chris Brown

 Year : 1992/2005

Songs you may have heard : Yeah/U Remind Me or Kiss Kiss or Run It

Two of the biggest names in

hip-hop, both Dr Dre and Timbaland are American record producers and rappers, and have appeared with various artists. In fact, the latter has teamed up with the former recently to introduce Detroit MC Hayes to the music scene.

Don't lie. There's been a time when a song from either artist has started playing on the radio, and you started dancing along to it, pretending you're in a club busting a move and impressing the ladies/boys.. Yeah, we've all done it. Don't lie. They're both attractive African-American men who make good music and have incredible dance moves. What more can we say??

Both TV dramas set in hospitals and revolve around the lives of a group of resident doctors, who are incidentally, all very good-looking people. How come we don't have such good-looking doctors? ER is slightly more focused on the patients and the actual drama of the ER, while Grey's Anatomy is more about the lives - and sex lives - of the good-looking doctors. George Clooney vs Patrick Dempsey, anyone?

If you're a fan of either show, you know the formula. A group of friends who stick together through all their shenanigans, mishaps and celebrations, often resulting in extremely hilarious episodes. They both produce really catchy phrases too, like Joey's "How you doin'?" and Barney's "Legen...wait for it.. dary!"

John Travolta vs. Zac Efron

Year : 1984/2002

Movies you may have seen : Grease/Hairspray

Friends

vs.

How I Met Your Mother

Year : 1994/2005

ER vs. Grey's Anatomy

Year : 1994/2005

We HAVE to compare John Travolta's performance in Grease to Zac Efron's performance in Hairspray. Both good-looking fellows did a wonderful job charming their way into our hearts with smooth dance moves and slicked back hair. Mr Travolta has some pretty badass roles tucked under his belt, but we'll give Mr Efron some time to step out of his emotional roles and catch up.

Leanna Rimes

vs.

Taylor Swift

Year : 1994/2006

Songs you may have heard :

Can't Fight The Moonlight

vs. Love Story

Year : 1984/2004

Songs you may have heard : I will always love you vs. you're going to love me (Dreamgirls OST)

Hanson Vs. Jonas Brothers

Year : 1992/2005

Songs you may have heard : Mmm-bop vs. Love Bug

3 brothers? Check. Pretty cute? Check. Feel-good Pop songs? Check. Thousands of screaming fans? Check, check, check, we're good to go.

Both African-American divas have powerful vocals and are known for belting out their songs. They have both also tried their hand at acting, with Jennifer Hudson's role as Effie in Dreamgirls winning her more awards than you have your ten fingers.

Starting out as professional wrestlers in WWE and later venturing out into acting, both Dwayne Johnson AKA The Rock and John Cena have led similar career paths. Also, they're both pumped on steroids. Just look at the size of those muscles!

The Rock vs. John Cena

Year : 1996/2001

Grease vs. High School Musical 1,2,3

Year : 1978/2006

Both musicals, set in the American locker jungle, tell the story of friendship and of course, love. Although Grease does have a little more hanky panky going on as compared to High School Musical, the characters are very similar, as are the plots, soundtracks, and... Well, you get the picture.

Metallica

vs. Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium, Bullet For My Valentine

Year : 1981/1998/1999

Songs you might have heard : Enter Sandman, Afterlife, Tears Don't Fall, Rain.

Without Metallica also known as the masters of Heavy metal , there wouldn't be these 3. No matter how much you want to deny it, you cannot. Also, Metallica is pretty much the icon that most of todays Heavy metal bands aspire to emulate.

David Beckham

vs. Cristiano Ronaldo

Year of Fame: 1992/2003

A lot of people saw Cristiano Ronaldo as a replacement of David Beckham, when he (David) left Manchester United for Real Madrid. Quickly after joining MU, Ronaldo became a household name, scoring multiple times for the team in the same lucky number 7 jersey that was donned by Beckham. Ironically, after close to 7 years with the club Ronaldo too left Old Trafford for Real Madrid as well.
