    The day pop went silent

Michael Jackson’s untimely death sees the whole world reeling from shock. He was supposed to be preparing for his comeback tour, then suddenly, he’s gone.

AT12.21pm last Thursday, the King of Pop suffered a cardiac arrest and succumbed. His sudden demise left everyone in shock: Not just his fans; even his father told the Media that his son was in good health and that no one had expected this to happen, what more when he had recently gone for a thorough check up prior to a comeback tour he was preparing for.
And this physical examination got the thumbs up from Jackson’s physician.
In fact, the night before he died, Jackson was still practising. His manager and confidant Frank DiLeo said that the star had told him how happy he was and was confident that everything was finally going to turn out just like he had imagined.
His first big show would have kicked off in the UK in July. Then he died. He was at his rented villa in Los Angeles when he collapsed.
In the last few months, reports of alleged collapses and eating problems had become increasingly frequent.
Jackson’s weight was thought to have dropped down to just 58 kilograms.
Emergency services were called to the suburb of Holmby Hills whilst Jackson’s private doctor tried to resuscitate him when his body gave way to the heart attack.
On failing to revive him, a call to 911 was made. The call, which was aired over the E! Channel for viewers later, was made by a male at the residence. It went; “… he doesn’t have a pulse. Can you please send someone quickly. There is a doctor here. But he is not breathing. Please send someone….”
Indeed, a fire service spokesman told the ‘LA Times’ that the 50-year-old was no longer breathing and there was no sign of a pulse when medics arrived at 12.30.
An ambulance rushed Jackson to the nearby UCLA Medical Center where several doctors struggled to save him, to no avail.
His brother Jermaine Jackson told reporters that medics including emergency doctors and cardiologists tried for over an hour to resuscitate his brother.
The exact cause of his death is unknown. The family suspects foul play but nothing has been confirmed.
The King of Pop’s body was taken by helicopter to a medical facility four hours after his death in preparation for an autopsy.
At Press time, results aren’t in yet.
Meanwhile Brian Oxman, Jackson’s lawyer said the singer died from a medicine overdose.
Apparently, Michael was taking a cocktail of medication to combat several illnesses to prepare him for his big comeback tour.
One Paper claimed that the popstar injected the powerful painkiller Demerol before his death.
Jackson leaves behind three children - Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr. (12), Paris Michael Katherine Jackson (11) and Prince ‘Blanket’ Michael Jackson II (7).
Oxman said they would now be looked after by Jackson’s mom Katherine.
Jackson was a pop star of the highest order – the famous “gloved one” who revolutionised the dance and music video mediums.
Young Michael shot to stardom when he was still performing with his brothers in a group called The Jackson Five. Recording for the Motown label, Michael and his brothers had number-one hits with each of their first four singles, I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save and I’ll Be There.
The next stage of Jackson’s life was his most successful - artistically and financially. He released a string of hits - Off the Wall in 1979; Thriller in 1982; Bad in 1987; and Dangerous in 1991. These four albums have sold nearly 200 million copies - Thriller alone sold 109 million copies, making it the best-selling album of all time.
Alas, Jackson’s career soon took a nose dive. With a host of controversies plaguing him – from his botched plastic surgeries to accusations of paedophilia, and stories of his weird Wacko Jacko ways - Jackson’s fame quickly waned. He also lost his form after Dangerous. His final two studio albums, HIStory (1995) and Invincible (2001), chalked dismal sales worldwide.
Whatever’s said and done, Jackson is still very much loved by fans and friends around the world. And he will still go down as the King Of Pop.
