Designed To Impress

Twenty one year old, Tan Syen Yee, who is a graduate of SEGi College, Subang Jaya gives us an insight into the sweat, passion and grit behind her final year project.

Design is not an easy concept to explain, as everyone is unique in their perception of what makes a product or advertisement attractive. The pitfalls of design are in the needs of the customer, the type of product, and the suitability of the design. Factors such as attractiveness also weigh in.

And this is where Tan Syen Yee, 21, chooses to research thoroughly - so as to avoid these difficulties and produce stellar work of which she can be proud. Her design inspirations come from the target audience that she knows like the back of her hand, thanks to the research.

"As a designer, we cannot just design what we want or desire, we must consider on the needs of our customer and the type of product that we are going to promote," she explains. "We need to find out what kind of design is suitable for the new product. We also need to consider whether the design is able to convince the audience to spend money to buy the new product."

In all that, she adds, the clear presentation of a message is the most important factor.

For her final project, Tan worked on an advertising project for a new line of Cadbury chocolates called 'Friendship'. This mock up product is supposed to be ready made gift packages which would cater for all sorts of occasions.

 Why it's called Friendship?

According to Syen Yee, the concept came from a sentence that she stumbled upon while doing her research. It was a quote that read "friends are just like a start, we can't always see them, but we know they are always there". This quote fired her imagination and hence, the new product "Friendship" has the same meaning.

"We don't need this product everyday, but when we need it, we can have it anytime and it's easy to get hold of as it is a ready-made gift," she elaborates.

The website, booth and lorry ads are all just mock ups. Please note that this product is not available in the market.
